The red rock canyons, sweeping vistas and majestic mountain views truly make Mesa Verde Country a destination that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature. Whether it’s waking up to canyon views, strolling through a vibrant farmers market, or sipping wine after a sun-soaked adventure, this corner of Colorado offers the perfect balance of relaxation and exploration.

Over a long relaxing weekend in Mesa Verde Country, you’ll experience a blend of cozy stays, scenic trails, local flavors, and restorative moments. It’s an ideal escape for anyone looking to recharge while savoring the beauty of the Four Corners region.

Day 1: McElmo Canyon

For an immersive, tranquil weekend, it’s worth booking a stay at Ancient Echos’s at Kelly Place, just 25 minutes outside of Cortez, down stunning McElmo Canyon. The soft breezes rustling through the nearby fruit trees and whispering down the quiet red rock canyons are a soothing balm to the soul, and the views from any of the lodgings are picturesque.

Kelly Place is more than just a spot to sleep after a day out adventuring, it’s a refuge that invites you to stick around, explore and relax. We’d recommend you spend a full day enjoying all that it has to offer — starting with a delicious locally-sourced breakfast on the patio, surrounded by shade trees and hummingbirds. Lose track of time in the guest library, sipping a cup of coffee, and then head out and explore the self-guided tour to visit multiple archaeological sites on the property. Ask the owners about opportunities for restorative yoga for an even more relaxing evening activity. Be sure to be outside as the sun sets behind Sleeping Ute Mountain and the stars come out to play. Nearby Mesa Verde National Park is an International Dark Sky Park, known for its clear night skies and endless stars. You can see these breathtaking skies from anywhere in Mesa Verde Country, and the peaceful surroundings of Kelly Place make stargazing even more magical.

Pro tip: For an even more relaxing weekend in Mesa Verde Country? Fully unplug – turn off your phone on your arrival, and leave it in your room for the rest of the weekend.

Day 2: Local foods + canyon hikes

During your second day in paradise, head to the Cortez Farmers Market to stock up on local groceries and goodies. Drop your purchases in the communal kitchen back at Kelly Place, have a relaxing lunch while admiring the unobstructed views of Sleeping Ute Mountain, and then head down the road a bit further to the Sand Canyon Trailhead, part of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. There are so many incredible cliff dwellings and archeological sites to spot on this hike, so take your time, bring binoculars and enjoy this peaceful desert adventure. The trail is 6.5 miles one way, so be sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen and a layer, as the desert environment can change quickly! There are plenty of things to see before you reach the end of the trail, so you can always turn back sooner if you aren’t looking to hike the full 13 miles.

After you’ve worked up an appetite in Canyons of the Ancients, head into Cortez for dinner — there’s everything from sushi to Mexican to steak to local farm-to-table, the town’s foodie scene is your oyster! After dinner, grab a pack of beer or cider from one of the many local breweries/cideries in town, and head back to Kelly’s Place to enjoy another evening relaxing and stargazing.

Day 3: Horseback riding + wine tasting

On your final day of your long relaxing weekend in Mesa Verde Country, take a morning trail ride with neighboring Canyon Trails Ranch. They are just a five-minute walk from Kelly Place, so you won’t even need to start your car for this excursion. The guides here have plenty of fun facts about the area, are kind and helpful to folks who might not have ridden a horse before, and the mid-morning ride will both excite and relax you. There’s nothing quite like swaying in the saddle, surrounded by fantastic views and good company to soothe your nervous system.

Once you’ve ridden to your heart’s content, head a bit further down the road for some local wine-tasting at Sutcliffe Vineyards. Tour the vineyards, sample a diverse option of wines, and enjoy a charcuterie board or a full meal provided by the onsite private chef. It’s a relaxing and romantic way to end your long weekend of rest and relaxation in Mesa Verde Country.

After three days of slow mornings, scenic hikes, local flavors, and peaceful stargazing, you’ll leave Mesa Verde Country feeling fully recharged and inspired by the natural beauty and warm hospitality of the region. From the quiet red rock canyons of McElmo to the rich history woven into every trail, and the simple pleasures of fresh market finds and local wine, this corner of Colorado reminds us that rest and adventure can coexist in perfect harmony. Whether you’re returning home or continuing your travels from here, the calm, expansive energy of Mesa Verde Country is sure to linger long after you’ve left.
