Stories of the Native American experience, including the Pueblo people, often is told in the past tense. At the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, however, visitors experience a broader understanding of Ancestral Puebloan culture and modern culture through immersive workshops, tours and travel opportunities. Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is a 170-acre research facility and living classroom offering hands-on archaeology programs. Experience Crow Canyon, which is located in the high desert, where deep sandstone canyons meet pinyon-, juniper-, and sage-covered plains. Located at an elevation of 6,200 feet, this beautiful campus also enjoys a striking backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

Reserve a spot on small group tours of Southwest Colorado led by archaeologists and American Indian scholars imparting the importance of the scientific study and applications of archeology. In addition, the Research Institute at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is host to resident and visiting interdisciplinary scholars collaborating and sharing extensive research with the larger community.


Archeology is enjoyed people of all ages at the center. Visit a current excavation site, tour a working archaeology lab, and explore the incredible history of the ancestral Pueblo Indians. Open to participants 10 years of age or older, archeological dig tours are offered every Wednesday and Thursday, May through September. Crow Canyon also offers free one-hour campus tours every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10 a.m. late May through mid-October. Select dates are also still available for the Crow Canyon Archeology Lab Program. Open to participants 18 years of age or older. Dig in the dirt at excavation sites during field school and archeology programs available to teens through lifelong learners. You can participate in a multi-year Northern Chaco Outliers Project at Haynie, an Ancestral Pueblo village near Cortez. Comprising of two Chaco-period Great Houses (A.D. 1050–1140) and numerous small houses, Haynie is beloved to contain some of the most important archaeological information in the Mesa Verde region.

The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center invites the public to be part of the Haynie excavation project through its range of archeology and research programs. Your work will help researchers understand Chaco influence in the Mesa Verde region and the changing human and environment relationships during the A.D. 1130–1180 drought. Imagine the potential for modern application!
