Four Corners National Monument

If you’re up for a fun family adventure in Mesa Verde Country that no other attraction in the US offers, plan to take a trip to Four Corners National Monument. The monument marks the spot where Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico touch, and it’s the only place like it in the entire USA.

What makes this place so special and unique is that you can be in four places at once! You heard right, the monument lets you stand in four states all at once, albeit with a little maneuvering – like crouching on all fours but it can be done!

What is the Four Corners National Monument?

Four Corners National Monument is the only place in the United States where four states—Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico—meet at a single point. This unique geographic landmark lets visitors stand in all four states at once, making it a must-see destination for road trippers and photo seekers alike.

Beyond the novelty, Four Corners National Monument holds deep cultural significance as it lies within Navajo Nation land and is also historically tied to the Ute people. Visitors can explore Native artisan booths, learn about the region’s rich Indigenous heritage, and experience the intersection of culture, history, and geography.

HOW TO GET THERE

Four Corners National Monument is located approximately 44 miles south of Cortez, making it an easy day trip from Mesa Verde Country. The route takes you through wide-open desert landscapes, offering plenty of opportunities to soak in the scenery along the way.

While the drive is straightforward, the monument is quite remote—so it’s important to plan ahead. There are limited services on-site and no running water, so be sure to bring plenty of bottled water, snacks, and anything else you might need for a few hours in the high desert sun. Don’t forget sunscreen and sun protection—the wide-open setting means little to no shade, and the desert sun can be intense even on cooler days. Staying hydrated and protected will help make your visit safe, comfortable, and memorable.
