Horseback Riding

Saddle and cliff dwelling view from horseback riding trip in Mesa Verde Country

LIVING THE COWBOY DREAM

From the saddle, exploring Mesa Verde Country unfolds at a slower, more mindful pace. The rhythm of hoofbeats sets a tone of presence, and the scents of sagebrush and leather drift on the breeze. Horseback riding offers a peaceful way to connect with the landscape, letting you take in sweeping views of our red rock canyons, quiet forests, wide-open mesas, and ancient structures from a timeless and shared point of view. Whether you’re tracing historic routes or wandering through stunning landscapes, the experience invites you to see the region not just as a destination, but as a place to pause, breathe, and truly feel the land.

Saddle up and connect with history, scenery, your horse, your travel companions, and a unique perspective of the area. There are several riding stables and ranches that cater to riders from novice to experienced, allowing you to tour our wild country at your pace. Options range from longer stays at one of our dude or guest ranches to half-day trail rides to learn about Ancestral Puebloans. Enjoy several days of trail rides and all-inclusive escape, or build a few hours of horse-time into your visit—either way, you’ll make new (equine and wrangler) friends, develop a connection to the area, and feel your stress soften in the fresh air.

Note: While Mesa Verde National Park is known for wild horses, please don’t attempt to approach or ride those creatures. Nothing like a kick to the teeth to ruin your vacation.
