Wild Game a Plenty
Big game hunting in Mesa Verde Country is legendary. According to American Hunter, the best bet for mule deer is in Montezuma County, which makes up a large part of Mesa Verde Country. Dolores-based hunters have brought in many Boone and Crockett records. In addition to trophy mule deer, Southwest Colorado also has one of the largest elk herds in the state. Most big game hunting is done on private lands or in National Forest areas.
Small game, waterfowl, and Merriam turkey hunting are also available in Mesa Verde Country. Detailed information about hunting seasons, regulations, and license applications are available at the Colorado Department of Wildlife website. Any person 12 years or older may obtain a Colorado hunting license. Anyone born after January 1, 1949 must have a current hunter education certificate before applying for a license.
Drop camps are available as well as horse and tack rentals, and there are many licensed outfitters/guides in the area. A Colorado hunting license is required for any person 12 years or older; a current hunter education certificate is required for anyone born after January 1, 1949. Please keep campsites clean and food put away to avoid encounters with bears, skunks, and other creatures; maintain a respectful distance from the animals you meet.
