Now this is a perspective of Square Tower House that you don't see everyday! We love spotting this site from the overlook, but for an even more immersive experience we recommend taking the guided tour with the park rangers.

Along with a 90 minute round-trip hike along an unpaved trail with drop-offs, switchbacks, and 2 ladders, you will get to peek inside structures and view petroglyphs that aren't visible from above. Thanks for letting us share this great photo @desertsolitaire!

"The pit houses found along the Mesa Top Loop may not be the most visited or glamorous sites in the Park, yet they provide valuable insight into the early construction techniques of the Ancestral Puebloans. ⁠
⁠
The earliest dates of people living in the Mesa Verde area are from around 550 to 600. Shallow pits were dug with sticks, which was slow and difficult work. Walls and roofs were then built by covering a latticework of poles with layers of mud, as can be seen in this photograph. Hundreds of such pit houses were built on the mesa tops over the next couple of centuries. Building processes perfected here were then utilized as the Puebloans moved into the alcoves and created the more elaborate and sophisticated cliff dwellings.⁠"

Mesa Verde National Park is an amazing place to see not only incredible cliff dwellings, but the evolution of architecture for the Ancestral Puebloan people!

Have you ever visited the Lowry Pueblo in Canyons

Have you ever visited the Lowry Pueblo in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument?

Lowry Pueblo had a total of about 40 rooms and 8 kivas at its peak in the early 11th century and was home to approximately 100 people. The pueblo was arranged in a roughly rectangular block, with some portions reaching as high as three stories. A great kiva, constructed outside the eastern limits of the village, is nearly 50 feet in diameter.

For more information about this incredible structure, guidebooks are available at the site or at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum — we hope you will come and explore!
